To begin with, Bradley sat in the rear and Kenneth sat in the front. They paddled a number of miles before they decided to switch places. In trying to do so they lost control of the canoe. It flipped over, and both of them found themselves in over their heads. The water was ice cold. They struggled to right the canoe, hauled themselves into it, then dipped out the water and began paddling downstream. They were sitting there in icy cold water, paddling like crazy. They returned the canoe they had rented, paid the price, and rushed home to take a bath. </text>

This was standard procedure in those days. The father, Brad, was preaching against alcohol consumption and was working toward its prohibition. Brad told Kenneth that he was about to order a keg of dark beer or stout for his mother, and when it came, he wanted Kenny to tap it and give her a drink. The barrel dropped down the stairs, bounced several times before Kenneth was able to stabilize it. As he was trying to open it the beer spilled all over and filled the house with the smell of alcohol. When Brad came home, he looked the situation over, and he just looked at Kenneth in disgust. </text>
